We Do This 'Til We Free Us, 2021

A digital illustration of a yellow and white-hued full moon on the horizon over a body of abstract dark and light blue-hued water, reflecting in the ripples. The words We Do This Til We Free Us are at the top and the words Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice are at the bottom. Mariame Kaba’s name sits on the horizon.
My artwork is on the cover of Mariame Kaba’s first book, We Do This ‘Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice, released in February of 2021 and now a New York Times Bestseller. The book is a compilation of Mariame’s essays, interviews, talks, and a few unpublished pieces. The book is published by Haymarket Books and was edited by Tamara K. Nopper.

I am so honored that Mariame asked me if she could utilize this artwork for the cover. Of course I said yes in a heartbeat. The original artwork was from a limited postcard series called #MariameTaughtMe, inspired by her own words of wisdom and sold to benefit various abolitionist organizations in Chicago between 2016-2020. We sold over 1,000 postcards! I also created some limited edition button designs in collaboration with Mariame to celebrate the book release.
